Community – Young People – Football
I am mindful that sport, and in London, football in particular is a good way of diverting young people to positively direct their skills and energies and creates opportunities which can last a lifetime. Raising the profile of the High Sheriff of Greater London to the wider community, I marched with members of the community, the Mayor of Greenwich, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Paul Elliott CBE MBE and Professor Martin Griffiths from the Charlton Athletic’s football ground to Charlton Station for their Red White and Black march promoting diversity and inclusion; All different-All together- All Charlton.
The West Ham United Foundation has long been committed to supporting diversity amongst individuals, groups and communities, promoting inclusion and celebrating cultural heritage.
During the Black History Month (BHM) of October, the Foundation amplifies its efforts to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Black individuals to football and wider society.
As part of Black History Month 2024, which was themed ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, I was invited to speak to the team at the Foundation who work with young people in the community and with their supporters: https://www.voice-online.co.uk/sport/football/2024/11/04/first-black-high-sheriff-of-greater-london-supports-west-ham-foundations-black-history-month-plans/
