Crown Court Visits
I have visited most of the Crown Courts in Greater London. During a standard visit, I will be introduced to staff working in various departments, find out about the work they do and how they interact with each other and progress the work of the Courts. I will meet with the judges and tour the building. At many Courts at the request of judges and Court managers I have awarded High Sheriff of Greater London Special Recognition certificates to Teams, and sometimes specific members of staff as a formal sign of recognition and appreciation for the work they do. A gesture such as this goes a long way to boosting morale.
I have heard of the challenges related to funding, working with distressed members of the public and managing juries. I have admired the voluntary support that is given to those supporting the justice system, in particular those who provide support to witnesses.
Crown Court Judges are authorised by statute to make awards to witnesses who have assisted with securing a conviction. Many witnesses have demonstrated extraordinary bravery or public spiritedness. The award ceremonies that I have arranged have taken place at the Inner London Crown Court and the Supreme Court. The awards ceremonies have been followed by refreshments.
