The High Sheriff of Greater London Impact Fund provides grant funding to community and charitable organisations operating across Greater London for the purpose of delivering programmes aligned with priority thematic areas.

The Fund’s first funding round will prioritise initiatives that improve mental health outcomes for people in prison, including programmes that promote rehabilitation, and mental health awareness within prison settings.

The initial needs identified:

    • 90% of prisoners in the UK have at least one mental health issue

    • Rates of severe mental illness among prisoners are 10 times those in the general population

    • 37% of NHS expenditure on adult healthcare in prisons is on mental health, which is more than twice the proportion spent on the population as a whole.

    • 74% of female prisoners and 56% of males have self-reported mental health problems

    • UK prison population is projected to increase by 15% to 100,000 inmates by 2029

The immediate goal of the Impact Fund is to fund mental health projects in the 6 prisons and 2 Young Offenders’ Institutions in Greater London.

The grant management process is facilitated by the London Community Foundation – https://londoncf.org.uk/ – under direction of the High Sheriff’s Impact Fund Panel and all donated monies will be ring fenced for this purpose.
